Movie Ratings Explained

Rating Scale:

I find numerical or star-based scales for rating movies to be difficult. How is a 7 movie materially different from say an 8 movie, out of ten? Even the 1-5 star system makes it extraordinarily difficult to provide consistent ratings for different types of movies.

I use the following scale in my movie reviews:

  • See it in theatres.
  • Rent it.
  • Wait for the TV release.
  • Don't bother.

They're pretty self-explanatory, as the list is in descending order of time/money. So seeing it in theatres requires the most money and time, versus renting, watching it on TV and then finally not even bothering.

This sytem has been quite effective at conveying how good a movie is to friends and family, and so I'm sharing it with you.

Disclosure Policy:

I will make every effort to disclose, in the interest of transparency, whether I received any promotional consideration for movies that I review. I feel that it is important for the reader to understand what may or may not have influenced my review.
