Microsoft Prices Kinect -- MAB Loses All Interest

Microsoft's attempt at motion control gaming, the Kinect, will sell for $150 US. Announced today, Microsoft has indicated that the package will come with the Kinect Camera/sensor peripheral, a USB cable for use on the classic form factor 360s and a proprietary cable for use on the the new slim form factor 360s, as well as the Kinect Adventures title. The device will launch in November, Microsoft said. Kinect Games will retail for $50 US.

Also available is a Kinect console bundle, retailing for $300 US, which includes a new 4GB slim 360, the Kinect peripheral, a standard controller and the Kinect Adventures Title as well.

So where does that leave me in the great Motion Control for Consoles Debate? Decidedly unsatisfied. Firstly, I think laying out $150 of my earnings for something that will likely feel gimmicky and has been shown to have some very noticeable lag, and will likely suffer in sub-optimal lighting situations is a bit ridiculous. Also, I've yet to see a single implementation of motion control that is nothing short of ludicrous. Perhaps I'm a bit of a stick-in-the-mud on this one, but I'll definitely pass on this and wait to see if it has any redeemable value... and perhaps some good money saving coupons.

I've been skeptical about Kinect (and Playstation Move which seems even MORE gimmicky), especially since it looks to me like a desperate attempt by both Sony and Microsoft, to cash in on the Wii's popularity.

My final word: Pass, until I've had a chance to try it out for myself, and it comes down in price.
