Impressions: Rookie Blue

So, Rookie Blue, a new Canwest Series premiered on Global tonight. The premise is pretty simple: Four "rookies" join the police force, fresh out of the academy. In a sense, it's the Grey's Anatomy of the police force.

Okay, so what was it like? All in all, it was an entertaining hour. There is some promise to the show, although it will really depend on if any of the main characters develop any sort of personality. McNally (Missy Peregrym), the prodigal child of the fallen legend is very much stereotypical insofar as the parallels can be drawn to Meredith Grey from Grey's Anatomy. Can she break free of the shackles of her father's legacy and self-destruction?

I barely know anything about any of the other characters. Nash (Enuka Okuma) is a mother, that's all I really know. The two guys, Epstein and Diaz (played by Gregory Smith of Everwood fame and Travis Milne, respectively) are both handsome, but so far have shown us very little about the characters. Diaz is a by-the-books top-of-the-class graduate who has a hard time adjusting to real life police work.

So, what does this show have in store for us? I really have no clue. I've got it PVRed and I'll give it three or four episodes to capture my interest. I wish I had more to say on the subject, but for the time being, I feel kind of mixed about the show. It's cute, but plays to so many one-dimensional archetypes and story arcs, that I fear it may fall into those traps instead of treading new or at least slightly more fleshy story territory.

However, I'll give the show some credit for featuring (if briefly), a transgendered individual, one of the few instances of transgendered individuals on prime time. Never mind that the person was being "booked" and searched, and they couldn't decide whether a man or woman should search the individual in question. Journey of a thousand miles and all that. ;-)

Edit: It's been three episodes and I really love it! The characters have finally started to develop and grow and that's totally awesome. It's definitely on our must-watch list!
